I agree with the difficulty in assessing work of students. It has to have some structure to keep it reasonable. The rubric is a great tool as long as the students' know what you are looking for. My concern is in being overly constraining in a rubric so I plan on keeping it to the technical aspect and include points for surprising me. I want them to learn to push the edge on some of the rules. "Don't give me what I want but give me what I ask for."
